I think it's a good idea to explore for many people around who would like to engage somehow in making the world a better place and create meaningful links between people, but who suspect in the bottom of their hearts that humanitarian aid (although unfortunately necessary in some places) or giving money to "development" projects (let's not even speak about structural/sectoral support to governments through Big Donors) might just not be the sustainable/adequate response for people, because it does not address the roots of inequality, violence, poverty....(it does not. face it)
Basically, through this web, one can LEND money to small entrepreneurs to help them start their little business. Micro-credit, indeed....not a new thing, the good news is, it seems to work into reaching its goal (a somewhat overlooked fact in many "development" projects), and you get your money back.
I still have to read the whole thing, but the idea sounds really interesting, since it overcomes the eternal donor-receiver scheme to which we are so used and which actually, does not address sustainability issues, or economic dynamics affecting these small entrepreneurs, not to mention people's dignity, agency and talent (also overlooked frequently.Yep.).
Those of you who work/ed in the "aid" industry might have other views or not agree at all...Not wanting to criticise or condemn the action of certain professional NGOs...(some of whom I know a bit first hand, and who actually could be inspired by these practices right? instead of depending on donors agendas and wasting time in managing the "politics of the logo"....). Hum.
I'm not saying to stop buying your Amnesty/ACF/Oxfam/IRC/MSF candles and agendas...I probably won't...but in any case why not take a look and think about how to engage with fellow citizens and "help" others....
